JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office arrested a 29-year-old man on charges of aggravated child abuse after a baby he was babysitting was found unresponsive and not breathing.
On Wednesday, police found a 1-year-old baby boy unresponsive and not breathing, according to a release from JSO.
The investigation found the child had bruising and swelling on the back of his head from ear to ear.
The child was taken to Shands Jacksonville by emergency personnel. Once there, medical staff told police the baby suffered life-threatening injuries due to violent shaking and massive head trauma.
The release said the child was in the sole custody of Rickey Valentine. On Wednesday, JSO Homicide Sergeant Jay Farhat told First Coast News that Valentine was babysitting four children in the 1000 block of Bunker Hill Court when the boy was found to have stopped breathing.
Police arrested Valentine Wednesday night, charging him with aggravated child abuse.
Valentine is currently being held in the Duval Country Pretrial Detention Facility. He is not eligible for bond, according to the jail information page.
