TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Gov. Rick Scott is directing Florida's workforce boards to step up and lend a hand to anyone who gets laid off by American Airlines or Siemens Energy.
Both companies have announced massive layoffs around the country. The layoffs at American Airlines could alone cost more than 1,400 jobs in Florida.
Gov. Scott, whose main priority has been creating jobs, calls the news disappointing.
"I've asked our workforce boards, I've asked all the groups around the state to talk to these individuals and see how we can help them. Hopefully other airlines, other air transport organizations will hire those same workers. One thing great about our state is we have a diversified economy and we're very aggressive at helping people that get laid off."
Siemens Energy plans to lay off more than 600 employees in three states, including 60 in Orlando.
American Airlines said it will let go more than 4,000 workers nationwide.
