ATLANTA -- Authorities say preparation work to stabilize fencing on a bridge in midtown Atlanta has begun, just over a year after debris from the structure broke loose and rained down on motorists on a busy freeway below.

CBS Atlanta reports that Massana Construction started working on the bridge this week. Full construction should occur in the next few weeks.

State officials have said problems with industrial glue led to heavy steel raining down from the bridge canopy last year. About 170 feet of aluminum fencing and canopy supports for a pedestrian walkway on the 17th Street Bridge crumbled above the main Downtown Connector on Aug. 13. The failure happened late at night, and no wrecks or injuries were reported.
