JONESBORO, Ga. -- The school board in Clayton County has appointed an interim superintendent to lead the district just south of Atlanta.

The Clayton News Daily reports that longtime Clayton County educator Luvenia Jackson will become interim superintendent on Oct. 1. Jackson was appointed to the position after last week's resignation of Superintendent Edmond Heatley.

Jackson, who retired from the system in 2009, served Clayton County schools as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent and in other positions.

School board chairwoman Pam Adamson stressed that Jackson would serve only temporarily. She said forums would be scheduled to seek public input on the next permanent school superintendent.
