AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The city of Augusta has reopened its public golf course, which had been closed since Wednesday.

City Administrator Fred Russell tells The Augusta Chronicle that the course is now open and under city management, with free rounds of golf being offered through Sunday.

The course, known as The Patch, was shut down at the close of business Wednesday.

Russell said former course manager Ed Howerton will be back from his reassignment as a recreation safety coordinator to keep the course operating until another private operator is found.

In a closed-door meeting Monday, the Augusta Commission authorized Russell to seek immediate outside assistance with the course, put its management out for bids and make an estimated $62,000 in repairs.
