Lake Forest, IL (Sports Network) - Brad Valois fired a 3-under 68 on Sunday to
earn medalist honors at the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.
Valois ended the stroke-play portion at 1-under-par 141. His 68 was the low
score for the first two days.
Todd White posted a 1-over 72 to grab second at even-par 142.
Matthew Mattare, one of the four first-round leaders, tripped to a 3-over 74
to slide into third place at plus-1.
Two courses were used for the first two rounds of stroke-play -- the Conway
Farms Golf Club and the Knollwood Club.
Valois and Mattare played at Conway on Sunday, while White was at Knollwood.
Valois started on the back nine and collected three birdies to go with six
pars on his opening nine. Around the turn, he faltered to bogeys at the second
and fifth, but recovered those strokes with birdies on the sixth and ninth to
claim medalist honors.
John Engler, Daniel Day, Jon Lindstrom and Kevin Wolf advanced to the match-
play portion in a 9-for-4 playoff.
Defending champion Randal Lewis posted a 4-over 75 to end at 10-over-par 152.
He finished in 82nd place and missed the cut for the match play portion of the
championship.
Conway Farms will serve as host for the match-play portion of the
championship. Match play runs from Monday to Thursday, when the championship
ends with a 36-hole final.
