Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong was "rushed to the hospital" over the weekend, forcing the band to cancel a concert in Bologna, Italy, on Sunday.

Bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool apologized to fans in a video posted on the band's website. "Billie got rushed to the hospital last night due to illness," Dirnt says, "and, you know, the doctors don't think it's a good idea for him to play today."

They didn't explain exactly what sent Armstrong, 40, to the hospital. Britain's The Sun says local reports suggest the star was suffering gastric problems and was discharged on Monday.

But Cool added, "We're beyond devastated, we're as sad as you guys are. Billie is extremely upset about it, and we'll see you very soon."

Green Day's next scheduled show is the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas on Sept. 21.
