Polk County, Fla. -- Polk deputies say an Animal Control Officer was caught stealing money and other items donated to help pets in need.

According to the sheriff's office, 21-year-old Benjamin Derrick stole money from a "Save Our Homeless Pets" donation box located on the front counter of the Animal Control building in Winter Haven. Detectives also found three large garbage bags full of donated items including dog food, treats, toys, beds, leashes, brushes, etc.

Detectives say Derrick admitted to stealing the cash and giving the other items to family, friends and veterinary clinics.

Derrick worked as a detention support specialist since December 2010. He was transferred to Animal Control in February 2011 and was assigned to kennels. He has since resigned due to his arrest on Feb. 6.

Derrick is charged with Grand Theft and Dealing in Stolen Property and is being held on $7,000 bond.
