CLAY COUNTY Fla. -- Today the Clay County Council on Aging received a grant for $468,736 from the Federal Transit Administration.
The grant will help the council purchase buses and emergency communications equipment to be used to serve the elderly, veterans and persons with disabilities.
Federal Transit Administrator Peter Rogoff was on hand at the Green Cove Springs Senior Center to announce the grant.
The announcement follows the State of the Union address. President Obama announced plans to use funds saved from the drawdown in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars to bolster transportation domestically.
The Clay County Council on Aging will use the funds to help purchase seven buses. Four of those seven will be to replace buses that are past their usefulness. With the purchase of these buses the Clay Council on Aging to 40.
The council will also use part of the funds to purchase satellite radios to be used during severe weather or other emergencies.
