JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The 8th annual VPK Kickoff was held Saturday as parents began signing up their four-year olds for the 2012-13 program designed to improve chances for academic success.

The Early Learning Coalition conducted sign-ups for the Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten Program  at Florida State College at Jacksonville and at Ed White High School.

It's not too late to sign up.

Eligible children must live in Florida and turn 4 years old on, or before September 1st.  The address must match the application. A Driver's License, utility bill, lease agreement, Florida Vehicle Registration card or pay stub can be used to verify address. Parents are also asked to provide their children's Social Security number.

The program is designed for children to get an early start on formal education and help them be reading at grade level once they are complete the third grade.

"It is a literacy rich program," said Cathy Parker, director of the Duval County VPK Program. "We find that children who have gone through a high-quality VPK program score higher on the Flickers, which is the state assessment test given to all kindergarteners in public schools in the first 30 days."
