JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A child who slipped away from his mother is in critical condition after she found him in a pond.

According to Melissa Bujeda, a spokesperson with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, the incident happened just before noon at The Vintage at Plantation Bay apartments, near the intersection of Collins Road and Interstate 295 on the Westside.

The child is 2, Bujeda said, and remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries late this afternoon.

The investigation into how the child got away from his mother is continuing.
