Jacksonville, Fla. -- Some local foster kids got a chance to learn a new skill today.
Forty foster children, many of whom had never surfed before, were on hand for the fifth annual Surf Camp at Jacksonville Beach this morning.
Professional surfers and other surfing enthusiasts worked with the kids to show them how to enjoy the thrill of riding a wave.
"It's all about the kids having fun," says camp organizer Daniel Terry. "Taking one fourth of their weekend away from trouble or worries and just throwing it in the ocean -- literally -- and just walking away with a smile."
Terry says the most important thing is that the kids have a good time. He says he hoped they learned something, met people, and possibly become surfers for life.
Family Support Services, the lead agency for foster care in Duval, Clay and Nassau counties, helps put together the camp as part of it's focus on the Great Outdoors during the month of June.
The camp is held every year the day before Father's Day.
