MAYPORT, FL -- Family and friends gather Sunday to welcome back sailors aboard the USS Hue City, USS The Sullivans, and USS Underwood.
Nearly 900 Sailors returned that have been deployed since August 20th in support of the war on terrorism. They were part of the Saipan Expeditionary Strike Group.
The returning ships are the guided missile cruiser USS Hue City (CG 66) and its embarked Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light (HSL) 48 detachment 3, the guided missile destroyer USS The Sullivans (DDG 68), and the frigate USS Underwood (FFG 36) and its embarked Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light (HSL) 44 detachment 1.
During their deployment, the ships performed missions in both the 5th and 6th Fleet Areas of Responsibility (AOR) ranging from Maritime Interdiction Operations (MIO) to multinational exercises and coalition operations.
The remainder of the Saipan ESG did not deploy with these ships and have since deployed to the Southern Command's Area of Responsibility to support missions there.
