JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Open trailers are being stolen all over town, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
There have been 73 trailers stolen since the beginning of 2013 and 21 stolen so far in April, according to a press release from Public Information Officer Melissa Bujeda.
Bujeda said the trailers' lack of vehicle identification numbers (VIN) make them difficult to track down if they are stolen.
The suspects are simply driving up and hitching their vehicle to unattended trailers, according to Bujeda.
Here are some tips from JSO you can use to help safeguard your trailer.
- Mark your trailer with identifiers such as your telephone number, date of birth, or another distinguishing characteristic and place on multiple spots on the trailer
- Take pictures of the trailer
- Secure trailer with a coupler lock
