She's the girl who tweeted wolf.
Or so Jimmy Kimmel called U.S. luge star Kate Hansen, who aided him in pulling off a prank that fooled just about everyone…including us. Hansen tweeted out a video of a wolf in her Sochi dorm earlier this week and everyone on the internet went nuts. Thing was, it wasn't a real video. The video was shot by Jimmy Kimmel, the latest in his series of fake viral videos.
On Thursday, Hansen appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live via a Skype feed from Sochi, and the two discussed how they made it happen.
It was a lot more involved than what you'd think.
Instead of shooting the fake video in some random dorm hallway, Kimmel had Hansen take a photo of the hallway outside her dorm room, then had his art department work 15 hours to recreate a life-sized replica of the Sochi dorm in his studio.
From there it was just the simple matter of bringing in a real Timber Wolf mix named Rugby and letting him run through the fake hallway. Yes, Kimmel confirmed, it was a real wolf, not a Husky dog.
In an extended cut of the video, you see Kimmel then come through the hallway after the wolf, sliding slowly down the carpet on skis, saying "Have you seen my wolf?"
The one problem with the stunt was that Hansen had to deal with serious security issues after she posted the video.
"Honestly, there was a little more backlash than I thought there'd be," Hansen said. And then later in the interview: "Security started freaking out, because technically there was a breach. You know, athlete safety. It kind of went a little crazy over here."
