OKLAHOMA CITY, OK -- Oklahoma City police officers are accused of using excessive force after a woman dies in their custody.

According to authorities 35-year old Milisha Thompson was arrested outside a homeless shelter Saturday night.

Witnesses say police stunned Thompson with a taser several times while she was handcuffed and on the ground.

After Thompson lost consciousness the officers took her to an area hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

A spokesman for the Oklahoma City Police Department says Thompson repeatedly kicked officers after she'd been stunned.

"The officers felt that she was not under control. That she continued to be combative by kicking at the officers and they decided to use this pain technique to try and get her under control," says Oklahoma Police Sergeant Paco Balderrama.

Thompson's family intends to file a lawsuit against the Oklahoma City Police Department for excessive use of force.

"How could she be such a threat to them handcuffed where they couldn't stop tasering her?," asks Thompson's mother, Eva Johnson.

Two police officers involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave.
