PORTLAND, ME -- People walking and jogging around Back Cove in Portland had quite a surprise Tuesday morning. Two moose wandered into the city.
A young bull moose spent most of his time around Baxter Boulevard, and attracted quite a lot of attention. Game Wardens say it's not unusual for moose to make an appearance in the city this time of year.
"There are big enough wooded areas in the city that it's pretty easy to a hide a moose in. This time of year it's hot, so they venture out towards back bay to cool off. The bugs are bad and that drives them out of the woods towards the road," said warden Jason Luce.
Wardens managed to coax that moose back into the woods, but the second moose worked its way up Munjoy Hill. Officials say it was injured when it was struck by a tow truck on Atlantic Street. The animal was injured seriously and will have to be put down.
