GREEN BAY, WI -- Ten-year-old Kennedy Corpus got a great start to her summer vacation with a personal note from President Barack Obama excusing her absence from her last day at school.

The fourth- - now fifth- - grader at Aldo Leopold Community School in Green Bay received a handwritten excuse note from the president after her father, John Corpus, stood up to ask a question and mentioned that his daughter was missing school.

"Do you need me to write a note?" Obama said as the crowd exploded into laughter. But he wasn't kidding.

"I'll start writing it right now," Obama said, then asked, "What's her name?"

As Corpus asked his question, the president scribbled the excuse on a scrap of paper, then stepped off stage to deliver it to the surprised girl who later said she thought he was joking at first.

The note reads: "To Kennedy's Teacher - Please excuse Kennedy's absence ... she's with me. Barack Obama." Kennedy said she plans to frame it, but she might make a few copies first, including one for her teacher.

Kennedy, who said her favorite subject was reading, has long been a fan of Obama and said, "He's really awesome."

"She deserves it," said dad John, who develops Fast Care clinics for Bellin Health, as he watched scores of cameras surround Kennedy to get views of her note.
