Apple plans to debut a smaller version of the iPad it's been working on in October, AllThingsD.com reports.

The device, dubbed the "iPad mini" for now, is expected to have a display of less than eight inches and will be introduced at a special event, sources told the site.

Meanwhile, Apple's next generation iPhone will be unveiled at an as yet unannounced event on September 12, the site reports.

Apple declined to comment to All Things Digital on its plans.
