TAMPA, Fla. -- David Williams said nothing to reporters as he was processed
and taken into Orient Road Jail on Thursday night.
The 22-year-old is accused of taking part in a botched robbery before
murdering University of Tampa track star, Ryan McCall, in August 2009 as he and
a friend walked home along the North Boulevard bridge.
"We get to see [Williams] now," said Kevin McCall, Ryan's father. "He's more
than just a photo."
Kevin is relieved to see this day come. The next step for him: justice.
"I'm pretty confident. The legal system is another hurdle, but I believe in
it," he said.
McCall's case remained unsolved for almost three years. Tampa detectives say
they knew about Williams within the first two weeks of the murder, but needed to
gather enough evidence to make a case.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office even hung signs urging inmates to
call CrimeStoppers with promise of a reward, and that got significant tips for
detectives.
Before Williams was taken to jail on Thursday, he had been serving time in
Dade County for a robbery and two burglaries that detectives say he committed
not even a month after killing McCall.
He had been in and out of jail since he was 11-years-old, detectives say, and
had been released from prison in Jackson County 27 days before McCall's
murder.
