Two shark bites at Florida beaches this weekend

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (WESH) —Two more surfers suffered shark bites in New Smyrna Beach this weekend.

Volusia County Beach Safety Capt. Andrew Ethridge said a 21-year-old man from Longwood was bitten on the top of his foot around 11:30 a.m. Sunday near near the jetty.

The injury, fortunately, was minor, and the man drove himself to a hospital.

Saturday around 5:30 p.m., a 32-year-old surfer from Port Orange was paddling on his surfboard near the Flagler Ave. beach approach when a shark bit him on his side.

His injury was also minor. He declined an ambulance ride to a medical facility.

Capt. Etheridge said these are the 13th and 14th shark bites for the year in Volusia County.

The names of the injured surfers were not available Sunday.
