JACKSONVILLE, FL -- The rebuilding begins. Tuesday crews began to sift through piles of rubble after a devastating fire at the Jacksonville Humane Society.
Over the weekend, a huge fire tore through the building. Numbers of dogs and cats didn't make it out alive.
Tuesday, crews made a special discovery.
When it seemed like they'd rescued all that could've survived the fire, three days later, he comes crawling out of the rubble.
"He actually came out of some duct work that was in the debris. We were just going through some of the debris to get some files and he just popped out," said a Humane Society veterinarian, Dr. Jennifer Broadhurst.
The people sifting through it all say it was a sign of hope.
"To have a rescue at this point is something we all needed to help our spirits," said Broadhurst.
He's scared, and has a bad cough and singed whiskers, but the vet says he'll move on.
The dogs are. They got to come home today. And the lights even got turned on. But the Humane Society is planning to give them a much nicer home soon.
"We have a lot of options because we have about 30 acres here and there are some new things available to the public. We don't have those things planned out yet, that's what the site committee is all about," said the Humane Society's Executive Director, Leona Sheddan.
For now, they'll work out of this old maintenance building.
"Once we get the site plan done we'll start the building process. I'd like to see it happen as quickly as possible," said Sheddan.
For this kitty, named before he even got here -
"He's a lucky kitty named lucky," said Broadhurst.
It's a good sign of things to come.
Lucky and his brother, TJ, will both be up for adoption.
A lot of how adoptions happen in the future will depend on a meeting that's scheduled for the 18th.
That's when the mayor's office and the Humane Society meet to talk about a possible partnership where the humane society would share a space with the city's animal care and control.
Regardless of how it's done, the Humane Society says they plan on building a state of the art facility, and no word on when that may be complete.
