NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. -- Deputies responded today to several complaints of drug and tobacco use in the parking lot at Yulee High School.
According to the Nassau County Sheriff's Office, Tuesday morning deputies and four K-9 units went car-by-car in the parking lot while students were inside.
They were looking for drugs or tobacco in plain view; dogs sniffed 61 cars. Dogs alerted police to narcotics in four of the vehicles, but searches turned up nothing.
Deputies spotted tobacco products in 13 vehicles, and issued civil citations to three students. They will have to go to court -- with a parent -- pay a $40 fine and take a tobacco-awareness course.
The sheriff's office said one student skipped class to move his vehicle once he heard about the search.
The search was done by the sheriff's office in cooperation with the school, and Sheriff Tommy Seagraves said searches like Tuesday's will happen throughout the county from time to time.
