JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- An 84-year-old woman who was kidnapped from her home by her son Wednesday has been found safe, police said today.
The woman and her son were found in Beaufort, S.C., which is near Hilton Head, according to Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Mike McCall.
Mary Dotson, 84, who disappeared from her Jacksonville home Wednesday night suffers from diabetes, a heart condition and dementia.
Her son, Richard Dotson, 63, has a bipolar disorder and was placed on medication for his disorder by a physician. But police said he refuses to take the medicine.
Both Mary and Robert Dotson appeared to be okay. As a precaution, the victim was taken to a local hospital in Beaufort, because of her medical issues. No charges were pending against anyone connected with the case.
Throughout the day, McCall said, police received tips and followed those leads. Police also didn't think Mary Dotson had her medication.
A neighbor of Robert Dotson who has lived in the area for about 30 years but did not want to be identified, said today that Dotson once returned some mail to her that was accidentally delivered to his home.
She said he seemed nice and like a good person, adding that she hoped the situation had a positive outcome.
Neighbors said Dotson had lived in the neighborhood between three and five years. Witnesses tell police they overheard Dotson saying he wanted his mother to live with him. Dotson was upset with his mother's caretaker situation, police said.
