CLAY COUNTY, Fla.-- Starting today, the Clay County Health Department will be offering the H1N1 vaccine to public and private school students.
"We finally have enough vaccine to begin our in-school H1N1 campaign for school children," said Nancy Mills, health department administrator in a statement.
Elementary schools are first on the list, followed by middle and high schools, then college and day-care centers.
Officials say they are starting with elementary students because children under 10 will need two shots, one month apart.
Parents were given consent forms and asked to return them completed. The vaccine is completely voluntary.
The department's supply of about 4,000 doses will be used to start the campaign next week at the following elementary schools:
- Tuesday: Rideout, Swimming Pen Creek, Clay Hill, McRae
- Wednesday: Plantation Oaks, Montclair, W.E. Cherry, Orange Park, S. Bryan Jennings
- Thursday: Argyle, Charles E. Bennett, Ridgeview, Middleburg
- Friday: Keystone Heights, Coppergate, Tynes, Wilkinson
Officials added that the remaining schools not on the list will be scheduled as the vaccines are received.
"We hope to continue to receive vaccine at an increased rate over the next several weeks and will work diligently to get the vaccine to the most at risk groups as best we can," said Mills.
