CHARLTON COUNTY, GA -- The Georgia Department of Agriculture, along with the Charlton County Sheriff's Office, the Atlanta Humane Society and local rescue groups removed about 140 dogs from a St. George home this morning.
Rescuers say "deplorable conditions" at what they say is a puppy mill led to the animals' removal.
The dogs were kept in overcrowded cages on the property, and rescuers say some will need veterinary attention.
Rescuers say some of the dogs -- adult and puppy rat terriers, chihuahuas and some mixed breeds -- were being sold out of the home on Highway 121.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture investigated the case. A spokesperson says the owner was able to avoid cruelty to animal charges by voluntarily surrendering the dogs.
Most of the dogs are said to be in decent condition, and will be suitable for adoption.
Georgia Canine Rescue and Rehabilitation and The Humane Society of Atlanta is handling adoptions in this case.
