YULEE, FL-- Boaters in Nassau County don't have an excuse not to put their kids in life jackets anymore.
The sheriff's office is now participating in the BoatU.S. Foundation's Life Jacket Loaner Program for Kids.
Boaters can borrow a child's life jacket for the day or weekend from the sheriff's office.
"We have a lot of recreational boaters in our community and unfortunately we see a lot of young kids not having a life jacket on," said Nassau County Sheriff Tommy Seagraves.
Florida law says every child under 6 years of age must wear a life jacket on a vessel less than 26 feet in length while the vessel is underway.
Sheriff Seagraves says a life jacket saved the life of a 2-year-old boy who was involved in a boat collision on the St. Mary's River last month.
If you would like to borrow a life jacket, call the Nassau County Sheriff's Office at (904) 225-5174.
