HILLIARD, FL -- A Hilliard mother is facing charges of child neglect after investigators say they found Methadone in her baby's body.
Detectives were first called to Brandy Love Edwards' home when her 15-month-old baby was unresponsive last month.
The mother told investigators that her baby was "breaking out in hives."
Edwards said she gave her daughter Benedryl and that she got better.
Police say Edwards ignored advice to take the child to the hospital when he developed hives and was "acting strangely."
After the baby's death, toxicology experts reported .18 milligrams of Methadone in the boy's body.
Detectives say that is twice the amount that would cause death in a child that age.
Nassau County Sheriff Tommy Seagraves says someone who live in the home where the child was found dead did have a prescription for methadone.
"We are still uncertain how the child got it," said Seagraves. "Could have been somewhere the mother had been or went to that day."
Methadone is a medication commonly used to treat narcotic withdrawal and dependency, particularly in users of heroin and other opiates.
