RICHMOND, KY (AP) -- Not everything you learn on TV is good for you.

A man who says he learned how to rob houses by watching a TV show has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for a string of burglaries in central Kentucky.

Michael Hobbs of Waco, Kentucky, pleaded guilty to five counts of burglary.

Police say Hobbs claims he learned how to break into homes by watching the Discovery Channel TV show "It Takes a Thief." The show features two ex-convicts who show property owners how vulnerable they are to theft.

Police Major Steve Gregg says Hobbs didn't keep anything and there was no physical evidence at his residence. The ex-cons on the show have told their audience that skilled burglars don't keep stolen items.

Police say Hobbs would typically show up at a house asking if the homeowner needed any help. Then houses in the area would get burglarized.
