HALLANDALE BEACH, FL (AP) -- A 5-year-old poodle's barking woke up a mother and her five children just before a pre-dawn fire spread through their Hallandale Beach home.

Leticia Harris, says Coco, her 20-pound male poodle, began barking early yesterday morning. The barking first awoke Harris' teenage son.

Then Harris went through the house to find Coco barking in the hallway leading to the kitchen, and she saw smoke around the refrigerator.

Harris unplugged the refrigerator and yelled for her children to get out, just as flames erupted. She and her two sons made it out through the front door. Her three girls jumped through a bedroom window.

Officials say the fire caused about 20-thousand dollars in damage to the home, and smoke rendered it uninhabitable. The cause of the fire appears to have been some electrical problem.
