GREENVILLE, SC -- A Greenville, South Carolina man was killed Saturday when a speeding car crashed into his home Saturday night and hit him as he sat in his living room.
Police said a woman called 911 reporting that there had been an explosion in her home and she could not find her husband.
When rescue workers arrived at the scene, they found that a car had come from the roadway, through a patch of woods, into the back of the house and out the front.
The coroner said the woman's husband, 62-year-old Frederick William Bardsley, had been sitting in the living room and was killed.
"In fact, they were watching TV together and she went upstairs for something, and that's the moment the car came through the back of the house," neighbor Tricia Gordon said.
Highway Patrol is withholding the name of the driver pending a reconstruction of the accident.
Neighbors said he was driving a Maserati and was walking around outside after the wreck.
He was not injured.
Neighbors said the victim, who went by Bill, was a model neighbor.
"Bill was actually the first person I met here," said neighbor Michelle Parker. "He and his wife brought me a house-warming gift. He got my mail for me. He actually, a few weeks ago, was watching my house for me when I was at the beach."
There hasn't been a confirmation of how fast the driver was going.
However, there is a 10-foot drop-off to the Bardsley's back yard, and beyond that there is a 6-foot-high fence.
The fence was untouched and there aren't any tire tracks in the yard.
Crews said it looked as if the car had been airborne for about 30 feet when it hit the house.
