MONROE, WA -- Police are looking for a thief who pulled off a bizarre getaway. Officers say he robbed an armored truck security guard and then fled down river on an innertube. Mitch Ruth saw the whole thing from his office across the street. He says the suspect got his attention because of what he was wearing. "He looked odd wearing a particle mask, surgical type of mask and that seemed odd, but when I saw the pump sprayer that he was carrying, I didn't think much about it," said Ruth. He says the suspect walked though the bank parking lot spraying bushes and trees until he spotted an armed truck guard coming out of the bank with a bag of money. Ruth said, "he grabbed the money and they wrestled very briefly, split second. Seems like it would take longer. And then he sprayed him with what I believe was pepper spray." That's when Ruth called 911 and says he chased the suspect more than 100 yards to a nearby creek. And that's where police say a very unusual getaway occurred. "When we went to the creek, it's called wood's creek which is about 100 yards from the bank, we did find an inner tube that was about 200 yards down from the point that we felt he entered the river," said an officer. Police believe the suspect may have used the inner tube until he was picked up by an accomplice. They also believe more than one person is responsible for this crime. "It was well planned. We were on the scene within two minutes of the call yet we were unable to apprehend the suspect."
