The Dumb Robber

FORT MYERS, FL -- Sheriff deputies arrested a man who they say committed a crime that was incredibly incompetent.

When you're a burglar, deputies say there are some things you just shouldn't do:

When you break into a building and the alarm goes off, don't answer the phone.

If you do answer the phone, don't give out your name.

Last but not least: Don't come back to the place you burglarized the night before.

"The alarm company called on the phone and he answered the phone," said George Tomas, Manager of the Junkanoo Bar on Fort Myers Beach. "He actually gave them his own name, which is astonishing and then he came back in the morning!"

Christopher Kron may just be one of the most honest suspected burglars the Lee County Sheriff's Office has ever seen.

Detective Tim Lalor says he answered the alarm company's call while he was inside the building.

"He admitted to answering the phone and told us how nice and professional the lady from ADT was as he gave his correct name," said Lalor.

But when Kron could not provide the correct password to the alarm company, deputies were called to the scene.

When the bar owner arrived at work later in the morning, she reviewed the video surveillance tape and saw a man enter the business through a rear sliding glass door.

The tape also showed the man walk around the bar, grab what appeared to be a bottle of alcohol and then exit the business.

The owner did an inventory of the alcohol behind the bar and discovered that a bottle of Grand Marnier was missing.

Deputies later observed a white male matching the description on the bar's surveillance video, discovered it was in fact Kron, and arrested him.

Lalor added that Kron committed the burglary on the night of his birthday and finished off his bash at the Lee County Jail.

"This is definitely up there for one of the dumbest things we've seen," said Lalor.

Kron was arrested and charged with unarmed burglary of a structure without persons inside, and petty larceny.
