HUDSON, KS -- Hudson, Kansas, home to 150 people, is better known for its flour than its registered sex offenders, but an unusual court sentence is bringing a lot of attention to the small town.
"It's been hell," said registered sex offender Leroy Schad. "It's embarrassing. I've received gestures two times coming down the highway."
Schad has to display signs that read, "A sex offender lives here," on every side of his home and on both of his car doors.
He says it's been the most difficult part of the sentence he received last July and he plans to appeal the decision.
"I've thought since the start that the signs on the car at least were a threat to me," Schad said.
Stafford County Judge Ron Svaty put in the unusual probation clause.
Legal analysts say that judges have the right to do what they want as long as the sentence does not infringe on the suspect's rights.
"We already have a sex offender registry and all these kinds of conditions do is create danger to the offender and everyone around the offender," said defense attorney Dan Monnat, who is not representing Schad.
Signs or not, Leroy Schad will still serve five years of house arrest.
He admits that he accepted the plea agreement to avoid trial, but feels the visual part of his sentence goes too far.
"Where would you want to go if you had those signs on your car?" said Schad. "Would you want to be driving around town?"
All Schad can do now is wait for his appeal hearing, but he won't take the signs down for fear of violating his parole.
