VALLEJO, Calif. (AP) -- The California Highway Patrol say a man stole a car to make a court appearance on a previous auto theft charge.

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- Edward Ates weighed 285 pounds when he was accused of murdering his former son-in-law in New Jersey in 2006. He argued that he was innocent: He was too fat to kill and make a getaway to Louisiana.
