(USA TODAY) -- An Indiana high school teacher is under investigation for leaving a
hostile message on his chalk board that stated in part, "the guns are
loaded."
The 28-year business teacher was removed Friday from
Edison Junior-Senior High School in Lake Station, near Chicago,
Superintendent Dan DeHaven told WBBM-TV.
The
teacher, who was not identified but is related to a school board
member, posted this message to sophomores and juniors studying personal
finance:
Period 6: (only)
(a) You are idiots!!!
(b) The guns are loaded!!!
(c) Care to try me?????
DeHaven
explained that the teacher had been absent the previous two days and
was "reacting to some comments that were made by the substitute
teacher."
School officials learned of the threat after a student posted a photo to Facebook, and police were notified.
"We're
not saying in fact that there is a threat. That's what we're
determining by interviewing the students, the staff," Chief Kevin Garber
said.
Parents were notified Monday by a phone message that said
the teacher was removed and declared, "Your student was never in
danger."
Some parents were angry.
"He could have had (a gun) with him," one told the TV station.
Residents jammed City Hall Monday night to discuss the incident.
"My daughter is scared to go to class," one parent said.
DeHaven
said that the teacher would not be in school Tuesday or Wednesday, and
that his future is uncertain, pending the outcome of the investigation.
