FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. - A popular ride at the Minnesota State Fair left some fairgoers hanging Thursday afternoon.
Twenty-four riders on the Stratosphere Swing Tower were suspended 100 feet above the Midway.
A State Fair official tells KARE 11 a safety latch got jammed while
the ride was descending. A ride operator had to climb up the tower and
manually release the safety latch for the swings to come down.
The ride is shut down temporarily until officials determine the latch is operating properly and the ride is safe.
The ride got stuck at approximately at 2:55 p.m. Thursday, the first
day of the State Fair. The swings were lowered safely to the ground at
3:15 p.m.
No riders needed to be rescued during the stoppage.
Witnesses say the total height of the ride is 200 feet, but the swings were only stuck about 100 feet off the ground.
A picture tweeted by @lindsi shows how high the riders were stuck off the ground.
This is the first year for the Stratosphere Swing Tower at the
Minnesota State Fair. An official says this type of stoppage has never
happened on this ride before.
