An Austrian surf skier was attacked by a shark.

Martin Kane said he was thrown into the water after the shark attacked him and bit his surf ski.

He said it was like being hit by a steam train and said he heard a loud bang and crunching noise.

While he was shaken, he was not hurt.

A fellow skier came to his rescue.

"I seriously thought that it might have been a rogue dolphin smashing into the ski or something, and I thought 'the bang', what really confused me was the extent of the noise and the crunching sound. It really surprised me, I just didn't know what it was. It didn't strike me until I saw the fin that it was actually a shark," said Kane.

The shark species has not been determined.
