WELAKA, Fla. -- A woman was arrested Tuesday on five counts of animal cruelty after a Pit Bull/hound mix and three of the dog's six puppies were found dead Monday.
Deondra Milledge was booked into the Putnam County Jail and her bond was set at $5,020, according to a release from Putnam County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Deputy Paula J. Preister.
The Sheriff's Office received reports Monday afternoon of a possibly malnourished dog in the 100 block of Beecher Springs Road.
A Good Samaritan found a dead female dog and three dead puppies near a trash collection site. Three other puppies were still alive and the Good Samaritan took the living dogs to care for them.
Investigators found the dogs to be severely emaciated, indicating that they had been abused or neglected. Upon further investigation, Milledge was identified as the suspect.
"It amazes me that a human being can be so insensitive and cruel," Sheriff Jeff Hardy said in the release.
