ST. MARYS, Ga. -- Caretakers of a historic cemetery in St. Marys hope a grant will allow them to locate the unmarked graves of several families buried there.
The hope is that ground-penetrating radar will reveal grave markers that have disappeared under leaves and dirt over the years.
The Florida Times-Union reports that Oak Grove Cemetery has hundreds of unmarked graves. Authorities say the survey of grave sites will be done in a section of the cemetery that dates back more than 200 years.
The $7,500 Historic Preservation Division grant will fund a radar machine that's about the size of a lawn mower.
