JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Providing health care for your pets can be costly.
In fact, some on the First Coast can't afford it but a local doctor is making pet health care affordable for everyone.
Dr. Susan Shelton is a vet at St. Francis Animal Hospital in San Marco.
Everyday she treats dogs and cats who owners can't afford their pet care.
In 2002 Dr. Shelton and the people at St. Francis Animal Hospital decided to take action.
So, they started a non-profit that allows those who can't afford health care for their pets to be able to receive the best care possible.
Dr. Susan says it's an enormous problem. There are so many people who love their pet like its their child and they just can't afford regular prices.
At St. Francis no pet is turned away, in fact, they figured out a long time ago that pets can't help what their parents can't afford. So, they needed to help the little pets regardless of what their owner's financial situation looks like.
Dr. Shelton says they serve thousands of pets annually.
