Hemming Plaza gets a green up for One Spark

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-- Hundreds channeled their green thumb Saturday, ahead of the One Spark Festival at Hemming Plaza.

Downtown Vision, Inc., Greenscape of Jacksonville, the Late Bloomers Garden Club, the Paul Bryan Group and Interline Brands joined forces to renovate Hemming Plaza. Hundreds of volunteers took part in the 'green up' with the help of a $35,000 grant donated by Wells Fargo.

Anna Dooley from Greenscape of Jacksonville is excited about the permanent makeover.

"Every city that you can think of has a wonderful park that people congregate in. [It is something] that is the heart of the city and Hemming plaza is that for downtown Jacksonville."

With One Spark kicking off April 9-13, Paul Garwol of Paul Bryan Group, got to work on a design for the plaza.

"What we wanted to do was put in plants with a lot of different textures, [that would] change the look of the area. But, [we also wanted it to] look the same year-round and plant nothing that will die in the winter."

Garwol said it took him three weeks to design the plan. Now, that plan is turning into a reality.

"I just love downtown and we really wanted it to look good for One Spark," said Valerie Feinberg of Downtown Vision, Inc. "And, it's going to [look great] and everybody can enjoy the city."

Garwol says he couldn't be happier with the permanent transformation.

"It's nice seeing it come to life."
