DECATUR, GA (AP) -- A prosecutor said today that former DeKalb County Sheriff Sidney Dorsey has confessed to ordering a hit on Sheriff-Elect Derwin Brown, who was gunned down his driveway in December 2000.

District Attorney Gwen Keyes Fleming said during a news conference that she met with Dorsey July 13th at the state prison in Reidsville -- where he is serving life in prison after being convicted of plotting his rival's killing.

The 46-year-old Brown was gunned down just days before taking office. Brown's family has been fighting to collect for his death, with daughter Brandy Brown Rhodes telling state officials that her family has struggled financially and emotionally since her father's slaying.

Brown's widow, Phyllis Brown, suffered a stroke in 2003 and died in 2006. Before she died, she filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Dorsey, the others involved in the killing and DeKalb County.

Fleming says Dorsey later tried to take back the order for the hit. Fleming says Dorsey told her her ordered Brown's death because he was angry after losing the election and also was upset because his marriage was in turmoil and he was facing allegations of sexual harassment.
