TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Senator Jack Latvala, R - Clearwater, knew he would have a strong battle ahead with his proposal to extend in-state tuition to some undocumented students.
SB 1400 would also extend the tuition break to student veterans. He also knew that Senator Joe Negron, R - Stuart, would be a hurdle to passage of the bill, but didn't know how much of a hurdle.
Negron pulled a procedural move on Thursday and as chair of the senate appropriations committee decided not to put the bill on the agenda.
Governor Rick Scott and former governors, Jeb Bush and Bob Martinez, support the bill and all released a joint statement pushing for the senate to hear it on the floor in response to Negron's move.
Students in support of the bill are not giving up and plan to rally outside of Senate President Don Gaetz office on Monday.
