JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- As absentee and early votes are being processed on election eve, candidates and the city are preparing for any legal challenges that may come up on election day.
The city plans to have a team of five lawyers on election watch starting early Tuesday morning and into the night. The Duval Supervisor of Elections Office says 300 people have been granted poll watcher status to be part of landscape where people vote on Tuesday.
Unlike with early voting on election day, voters must go to the polling location where they live for their vote to count.
"If you are in the wrong place, you can vote provisional," said Elections Supervisor Jerry Holland, who noted the canvassing board has the final say if provisional ballots are counted.
This is the first general election since the city council voted to consolidate voting locations, changing the number to 197 across the city and eliminating 53 places where people used to vote.
"You really need to know where you location is," said Holland.
"It is probably different if you have not voted in four years," he said.
Holland says the early and absentee count will be released around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night with election staff prepared to be working into the wee hours of Wednesday morning.
