The Florida Times-Union reported Putnam Sheriff Jeff Hardy was hired by the Putnam County Sheriff's Office in 1981 as a patrol deputy and rose to lieutenant. He left the department in 2005 and became director of the county school system security department.

Hardy is now completing his first term as Putnam County Sheriff.
