WASHINGTON -- Newt Gingrich's campaign reported raising nearly $10 million during the final three months of 2011, according to its Federal Election Commission filing released Tuesday.

A spokesman for the candidate also announced on Twitter earlier in the day that the campaign had raised $5 million in January.

R.C. Hammond made the announcement on Twitter as Gingrich was engaged in a fierce battle in Florida, the site of Tuesday's primary. The most recent polls showed Gingrich facing a ten-point deficit against former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

While the FEC report shows the campaign started the year with $1.2 million in debt, Hammond gave no figure for the debt the campaign has at the end of January.

Mitt Romney's campaign, which announced earlier in January they had raised $24 million the fourth quarter of 2011, said they wouldn't reveal January fundraising on Tuesday.

Romney spokesperson Andrea Saul said the campaign was in strong financial shape heading into Florida's key primary.

"Mitt Romney will be the nominee because he has the resources, the organization, and, most importantly a pro-jobs message," Saul said. "We closed the quarter with $19 million cash on hand and will have all of the resources we need to compete and win."
