Police presence increased around UF campus after reported rape on N. Main Street

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Police have enhanced security around North Main Street in Gainesville after a woman was raped at gunpoint near the University of Florida early Saturday morning.

The victim was walking downtown to her home when a man approached her around East University Avenue and 1st Street. He asked her if he could borrow her lighter and she allowed him to do so. After lending the lighter, police said she continued walking to her home.

Around the 600 block of Northeast 2nd Street, police said the man approached her again from behind and placed a gun to her head. She was able to confirm the weapon was a gun at some point during the encounter. 

Police said the man forced her next to a nearby business on 2nd Street and raped her. He then fled on foot.

The victim was taken to the hospital and a Rape Victim Advocated was notified and responded.
