JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Almost all of us have them -problem areas like love handles, baby belly, or a little flab here and there that won't go away.
Mesotherapy is a new procedure on the First Coast that reportedly helps people get rid of the flab with no surgery and no downtime.
Phillip Jarrett tried it. He had it done on the hard to get rid of area around his waist.
"Running on a treadmill, situps, doing crunches, but the love handle area I could not get rid of."
Not until he tried mesotherapy. He says it worked so well his wife wants to give it a try. Misty Jarrett says, "I thought it was amazing, that's when I knew I wanted to get it done."
Misty is a yoga instructor and the current Mrs. Duval County, but after two kids, she can't get rid of what she calls 'the flab' on her belly. "I have this one area I cannot get rid of as many yoga positions, crunches, and trainers that I have, it gathers here from all the carbs I eat."
Doctor Hardesh Garg was the first practitioner of mesotherapy in Jacksonville. He uses a mix of medications which breaks down fat cells and are then excreted by the body.
He gets the medications into the body by numbing the area first with a topical cream and then making dozens of tiny injections. He says, "We do anywhere from six to ten treatments which are usually two weeks apart and we have had excellent results."
Betty Cox had mesotherapy on her neck. She's had two treatments so far and is pleased with the results. "This was much larger. It really was, I looked like a frog."
She says mesotherapy worked for her. "It definitely feels a lot smaller than what it was. I didn't realize it was a fat deposit but that's basically what Dr. Garg said it was."
Misty just had her first treatment. It took just 10 minutes to complete and she says she hardly felt a thing. "It wasn't bad at all. I definitely don't like needles like most people, but it was okay. It didn't hurt much, just little piches."
She won't see any results until she comes back several more times and at around $350 a pop, it's not cheap - but many folks like her husband think it's better than surgery.
Phillip Jarrett says he's lost a full pant size. "I went down almost an inch an a half in my waist."
Dr. Garg warns this is not a way to loose weight. This only works on areas where diet and exercise didn't work.
Some people may experience an allergic reaction to the medications.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons says it is important to note, the F.D.A. has not approved all of the medications for use in mesotherapy.
