JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Duval County is ranked 20th in the nation according to Florida Public Interest Research Group in the number of facilities exceeding their Clean Water Act pollution permits. The review of public records covered a span of 18 months.
Neil Armingeon is the Saint Johns Riverkeeper and he finds the report troubling. Armingeon says, "We know the health of the river (St. Johns) is threatened. And compliance, the message it sends to our community is people violating the law will be held accountable. It is very critical right now."
The reports reads that 13 of 20 local businesses and governmental agencies allowed to discharge into the river exceeded their Clean Water Act permits at least once during the 18 month span.
